Our Institute

The Instituto de Física del Sur is a research center in Basic and Applied Physics and technology development based in the city of Bahía Blanca, Argentina. It is a body dependent on the Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS) and the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET).

It was created in June 2008 by resolution of the University Assembly of the National University of the South, after 20 years of sustained growth in research activities and human resource training in the Physics Department of said University. On September 6, 2010, the Board of Directors of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) resolved, by Resolution D. No. 2422, the incorporation of the Instituto de Física del Sur (IFISUR) as an Executing Unit of double dependency, CONICET-UNS , forming part of the Bahía Blanca Scientific Technological Center.

Its staff, made up of researchers, professionals, technicians, scholarship holders and administrators, carry out scientific research tasks in the field of Physics and in other areas of knowledge related to their discipline such as alternative energy, oceanography, materials science, nanotechnology, medical physics and the environment, among others.

IFISUR has as essential basic objectives:

  • Training of human resources through undergraduate and graduate teaching in the area of Basic and Applied Physics.
  • Research and development oriented to the generation of knowledge and technology in the field of Physics.
  • Strengthening of institutional ties with the community according to the Institute's priorities.
  • Knowledge transfer to the community through dissemination, information and training actions.
  • Cooperation and articulation of activities with national and international scientific institutions in areas of knowledge related to physics.

At present there are lines of research in basic and applied physics in the following areas:

  • Alternative Energies
  • Materials Science
  • Computational Catalysis
  • Computational Physics
  • Atomic physics
  • Oceanography
  • Vibrations and Acoustics
  • Environment
  • Medical Physics
  • Polymers and Applications to Nanotechnology
  • Soft Condensed Matter
